The Blue Boards / Main Forums / General R&B; Chat / James Hunter anybody?
Anyone heard the new album (People Gonna Talk) from the man Van Morrison reckons is "one of the best voices, and best kept secrets, in British R’n’B and Soul. Check him out"
Can't believe this guy isn't better known. Also can't understand why his latest album only seems to be available on import. It's out on the GO Records label, which was set up in the USA solely to record James - it comes to something when one of THE great R&B singers ever to come out of the UK can't get a record deal here. Seen this guy live on a number of occasions and he's always gone down a storm. Anyone know if the latest album is going to get a UK release?

Let's not forget the other two albums he's released as well - "Believe What You Say" and "Kick It Around", the former has Van Morrison and Doris Troy guesting. Both are excellent.

The only problem I can see with the upcoming album, having seen the track listing, is that he re-records songs first heard on the two albums listed above. Still looking forward to it though

In case fans aren't aware, People Gonna Talk is now available in the UK  (on Amazon for quite a steep £14.99 for example).
However, HMV has the release date as 17th April, but are selling it for a more sensible £10.99. Begs the question whether or not the the Amazon offering is still the import version, even though it doesn't imply that on the site.

Haven't heard it yet, so can't comment, but the Shades site is a big fan of the two previous releases.....

"People Gonna Talk" definitely available in the UK now - on Amazon for £10.99 for example. Already got it and it's an excellent CD. Wonder if it will get the promotional push to make it more than an also - ran.
Rumour has it that he's going down a storm in the States, albeit in reasonably small scale settings. Anyone have ay more detail?
If Movinmusic are reading this thread, perhaps you could post some more info about marketing, promotion, live appearances etc.,

It's still defined as an import on Amazon.co.uk (although who cares )

According to Movinmusic newsletter, official release date in the UK is 24th April - hopefully we will see a promotional push at the time of release - Hunter certainly deserves some success

James Hunter People Gonna Talk is due for release on 24th April.  Radio 2 have listed as a playlist record but haven't played it so if anyone emails them am sure it will help get more plays.  Try going for Wogan, mark lemarr, johnthan ross.   Next Mojo is going big  behind JH and slowly but surely hopefully other  magazines will catch on.  The bigger push is planned for July when JAmes in coming home to play some shows..

Hi

James Hunter's CD "People Gonna Talk" is now due for release at the end of May.  Apologies for announcing an earlier date but his lablel put its UK release back despite its availability in the UK as an import via Amazon etc.

We've been hearing about some Radio 2 airplay on Mark Lemar and on Craig Charles' shows and any e-mail requests for tracks would be great.

James will be in Europe from about the 10th to the 23rd July.  Dates in the low countries have been booked for the weekend of the 14th-16th but I can't announce the dates until various festivals have their press conferences.  In the UK expect dates in the SE with a few shows outside London including the following Free Show in Newcastle:

Sunday 23/07/2006, St Mary's Square, Gateshead, 6-7pm James Hunter to Headline - Outdoor Performance Square Stage, Free Show, supported by The Hacienda Bros (USA), Jeb Loy Nichol (USA), Eve Selis Band (USA), Aberfeldy (Scotland), and the Ukelele Allstars.

If you'd like to hear a track from the album here's a Realaudio link for you:

Mojo Magazine will be featuring the album in their June issue.

I think that's about it for now.  I'll announce further info on this site as it comes in....

Review of the "People Gonna Talk" CD will feature on the next update to the Shades site - hope to get see him live around July of this year, and will include the gig review as well.
Excellent to see such uniformally good feedback from the States - with the right promotion, maybe this will be the breakthrough that James deserves....

Got the album a couple of weeks ago - agree with the Shades review in the main, although I think the light and shade is there, the instrumentation is a touch sparse. Still a very fine album and absolutely delighted to see (hear) Hunter get played on UK radio.

I also have the Believe What You Say album, which is a favourite in my collection. Still think of the album as a fairly recent acquisition, then had a look and realised it came out in 1996!! Never ceases to amaze me that at a time when so much rubbish can be generated someone as talented as Hunter has only released 3 albums in well over 10 years and that, for a while at least, it wasn't even financially viable for him to make it a full time job - as I understand it, he had to supplement the music with a couple of part time jobs.

Let's hope this one really does it for him.......

I sincerely hope that "People Gonna Talk" takes off in the UK but "Bleieve What I Say" is a better album
Anyone know just how sales of the new album are going - I know it's getting some airplay but are people buying it (and yes, I have )

Have a vinyl album in my collection of a band called "Howlin Wilf & the Vee-Jays"- "Cry Wilf" which dates from 1986  with a young James Hunter on vocals, harp & guitar.Good album, more blues orientated than his recent work.He also made a few mini albums in the following years with this band. In 1990 the band splt and two members formed "Shout sister shout" and  bass player Tony Hilton went to join" Big Joe Louis".
