As a blues purist, there exists in me an inherent need to understand the blues from core to periphery, to view it from every possible angle and soak in its complexities while becoming comfortable with its flaws. While some may view this as an obtuse and academic way to look upon something so primitive, I have come to terms with that fact that this is a part of who I am as a person. The blues after all is subjective, open to interpretation and far from concrete; its genesis shrouded in hypothetical mystery.
Over the years I have become somewhat obsessive, both as collector and as academic amateur; constantly pouring through vintage recordings and reading up on all aspects of the music to fanatical proportions. At some point I had lost myself in the technicalities of the blues that I forgot what it meant to listen to this music; to appreciate it as the primitive art form that it is. To simply listen, enjoy and repeat.
Up until now I have enjoyed a familiar comfort of shunning contemporary blues; as a matter of course I had yet to find an artist who measures up or interests me.
That is until I heard Brownbird Rudy Relic (www.myspace.com/brownbirdrudyrelic)
He is by far the most consistent traditional blues musician out there today. His sincere approach to the music is refreshing: all original and recorded on vintage equipment -creating an honorable rendition that is all his own but steeped in long forged conventions.
Why he doesn’t have a record deal is beyond me…
This is real blues. I invite all interested in traditional blues to check him out…you won’t be sorry.
