The Blue Boards / Main Forums / General R&B; Chat / Joe Louis Walker recommendation?
Anyone out there who can recommend a starter CD from Joe Louis Walker?

I've heard the occasional track on the radio, always enjoyed it, but never actually followed it up and thought it was about time I did.
I suppose I'm a pseudo blues lover, a big fan of the likes of Robert Cray, Eric Bibb, 'Keb 'Mo and others, all of whom have on occasion been decried a little for over commercialisation of the blues. But I like them

So what's the best way to start listening in earnest to Walker?

If you like acoustic based blues (e.g. Eric Bibb, Keb Mo) then Silvertone Blues should have plenty of appeal with a fair amount of slide and acoustic guitar from a very fine blues player indeed!
I've always been a fan of Preacher and the President from 1998, a more mainstream effort but with plenty of good material and a modern feel.

Either of the above will amply demonstate what a great player Joe is, but in very different ways. I don't think he's the greatest singer (a little sharp and strained) but many will disagree.  He is however a master of his craft and he pulls it off on virtually every album he releases. I don't think you'll be disappointed with whatever you buy.
Come back and tell us what you think!

In The Morning from 2002 is in my view the best showcase for Walker's. From the sacred to the secular, jazz to R&B and straight ahead blues, this is probably the most direct and to the point of all his recordings. Not much to do with your taste for acoustic blues I guess, but definitely the one to go for if you want to give Joe Louis a try!
