The Blue Boards / Main Forums / General R&B; Chat / Album tracks, B-sides, forgotten singles
Some of my favorite soul songs are album tracks, B-sides, or forgotten singles. For example, when people talk about great Temptations songs hardly anyone ever mentions "I Truly, Truly Believe." That song just blew me away and ranks with ANYTHING the Tempts ever did. Melvin Franklin handled lead vocals. Or, this one... the Supremes seldom let Mary Wilson lead but when she did the result one time was "Where Is It I Belong", just a gorgeous, gorgeous song. Hindsight's alway 20/20 but Mary Wilson should have led more. Or... why does "Man Oh Man" by the Impressions always linger on the back burner? And the song that I will always associate with Barbara Acklin is "Please Sunrise, Please."
Or these...
One Thing Wrong With My Woman - Johnnie Taylor
Bed and Board - Barbara Mason
One Girl Too Late - Brenda and the Tabulations (one of the great groups ever)
Giving Up On Love - Jerry Butler
Any Way Thay You Want Me - Walter Jackson
The Loser - The Skyliners

I could go on but the point is - some really great music was buried on an album or just lost to the listening public. Anyone else have any songs like this that meant (and still mean) the world to you? You know... the ones that got away... songs that when you mention them cause your friends to say "Who?"

How about :

"If You Think Your Lonely Now" from Bobby Womack's Poet album
"Don't Let Me Lose This Dream" from Aretha's Never Loved A Man
"Look At Granny Run Run" from Howard Tate's Get It While You Can (how many only know the Ry Cooder version)
"I'm Not Ashamed" from Bobby Bland's Two Steps From The Blues (lauded album but this track hardly ever gets a mention)
"Land Of Broken Hearts" from the Five Satins
"Key To The Kingdom" from the Nutmegs (possibly was a single but still fairly obscure)......
And as for the one that got away - well, "Stay With Me Baby" has been recorded by many but no-one has even got close to Lorraine Ellison's tortured version, yet it rarely gets mentioned as one of THE great soul performances!!

Great choices. You are dead-on in mentioning Lorraine Ellison's classic version of ''Stay With Me." I couldn't listen to her sing that song enough. The closest thing to Lorraine Ellison singing "Stay With Me" for sheer vocal histrionics, I think, is Jennifer Holliday singing "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." Just as no one else could have sung "Stay With Me", no one else should ever attempt "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." The definitive version of those two songs has already been sung.

Again, your choices are great.

Take it you're not a big fan of "proper" R&B then Jennie!!

Mind you, if you are going to insult us all, the least you could is get it gramatically correct
